Basically, the major search engines “spider” the World Wide Web 24/7. “Spider” means they have software that crawls over every web site, gathering, categorizing and indexing everything about it. Then when a keyword is entered to search for a particular product, services, or type of information, the search engine puts all the websites dealing with that in order, from what the search engine believes would be most helpful and on down the line. If your business is not in the first few pages, you have very little chance of getting the sale.

Search Engine Optimization is more of an art, than an exact science. Those who are skilled at it will tell you that the search engines tell you a lot about what they are looking for, but not everything. Each search engine optimizer has their own theories, philosophies and practices.

Most search engine optimization companies offer free website assessments and estimates about what optimizing your web site would cost. Be sure to check out how many of their clients have reached first page status, and ask what their theories are.

Of the 22,000,000 businesses in the US, 13,000,000 of them have no intentional online marketing plan. Yet of those 13,000,000 US businesses with no intentional online marketing plan, 9,100,000 of them have web sites. In other words, 82% of US businesses have web sites. Half of those web sites are helping grow the business, and the other half are just sitting there in cyberspace doing nothing at all.

Building a web site and having it available on the World Wide Web is one thing. Having that same web site help grow your business is a completely different matter. The first step is designing and building a web site. The second step is creating that web site so that it can get “found” by the major search engines (Google, Yahoo and bing) when people enter keywords to search for products, services and information. And getting your website “found” is about SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

Simply put, SEO is the process of making your web site relevant and attractive to major search engines so that they will direct people (or traffic) to your website when they search the internet for the products, services or information they need and you provide.
